KMPDU Secretary General Ouma Oluga Criticises Government for Bringing Doctors From Tanzania
By JULIET MUTAHI
Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Ouma Oluga, has issued a new demand after Tanzanian President John Magufuli offered to send 500 doctors to Kenya.
Oluga demanded that the foreign medics must go through several procedures including undergoing an examination before they start working in the country.
The Secretary General criticised the government for seeking outside help yet there were many unemployed medical practitioners in Kenya.
He wondered why the government had to source for doctors from Tanzania yet it would pay the same money the local medics had been demanding for.
"Kenya has about 1,400 doctors awaiting employment. It would be very costly and therefore a show of imprudent public finance management to have 500 Tanzania doctors at Sh20,000 per day," he said.
At the same time, Dr Oluga accused the government of failure to retain doctor's in hospitals due to lack of proper working conditions.
He, however, assured that KMPDU would welcome the foreign practitioners and register them into the Union.
Earlier in the day, Magufuli had agreed to offer the 500 medics to help mitigate the effects of the recently called off strike following a request by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He stated that there were many qualified and unemployed doctors who were ready to offer their services in Kenya.
